Mokotedi Mpshe, the acting head of South Africa’s prosecution service, behaved irrationally and against his oath of office when he withdrew charges against Jacob Zuma shortly before Zuma became president in 2009, says the North Gauteng High Court. It is now up to National Director of Public Prosecutions Shaun Abrahams – in office for less than a year – to decide whether or not to prosecute Zuma on the 783 charges of corruption, fraud, money laundering and racketeering. This View on Africa will be presented by Gareth Newham, head of the Governance, Crime and Justice division. He will discuss the dynamics that could affect Abrahams’ decision to prosecute the country’s president.
