Recent local government elections revealed a significant shift in voter behaviour. The ruling ANC lost support in four of seven cities and its national support dropped to 54%. Can this decline be stopped? And will opposition parties capitalise on weaknesses in the ANC?

This View on Africa is presented by Gareth Newham, head of the Governance, Crime and Justice division at the ISS. He will discuss key dynamics behind the election results and what to expect in the run-up to the 2019 national elections.
