The evidence presented to the Marikana Commission and accepted by the six advocates acting as the commission’s evidence leaders is devastating for the leadership of the South African Police Service (SAPS). President Jacob Zuma released the commission’s report on 26 June. It has shown that the shooting of 112 striking miners that killed 34 people was unjustified. Top members of the police leadership seem to have acted with a lack of honesty and integrity when they gave evidence to the commission.

The media briefing will reflect on the findings of the report and what they mean for the future of the policing in South Africa.
