Next month one of the most eagerly awaited African maritime events takes place in Lomé, Togo. The African Union Extraordinary Summit on Maritime Security and Safety and Development in Africa has been previously postponed, so delegates are looking forward to a decision that will bind states to cooperate on maritime affairs.
Africa needs commitment from its leaders on issues like maritime boundary disputes, information sharing and how best to implement the various strategies and conventions on maritime security and development.
This View on Africa briefing is presented by Tim Walker, Researcher in the Peace Operations and Peacebuilding division at the ISS. He will discuss the key challenges for the summit and maritime sector in 2017.
