For the past seven years, Boko Haram has unleashed one of the deadliest forms of terrorism, brutalising communities in the lake Chad Basin.

The group is believed to have killed thousands of people in Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger and Chad, and forced millions from their homes.

But recently the group appears significantly weaker after losing hundreds of fighters, several bases, bomb factories and arms to national and regional forces, particularly the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF).

To intensify regional cooperation and strengthen the capacity of the MNJTF, Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari hosted the second Regional Security Summit last week. The summit brought together leaders from Benin, Cameroon, Chad and Niger along with other regional and western leaders.

This View on Africa will be presented by Martin Ewi, a senior researcher at the ISS. He will discuss what the summit achieved, and why a holistic approach that involves local communities is needed to defeat Boko Haram.
