Managing conflict and addressing mass atrocities including killings, rapes and disappearances in countries such as Burundi, Central African Republic and South Sudan remain a challenge. Fragility and the recurrence of violence also threaten other post-conflict states in Africa.

In this context, justice becomes an afterthought and is often a low priority during post conflict reconstruction or is conflated with other concerns.

Legislative limits in the protocol establishing the African Court of Human and Peoples Rights and barriers put before individuals approaching sub-regional courts also make access to justice in Africa more elusive.

This View on Africa will be presented by Allan Ngari, Researcher, Transnational Threats and International Crime Division. He will argue that for individuals to have access to justice, effective laws and mechanisms must urgently be implemented.
