In 2023, Africa faced many security and governance challenges. Protracted conflicts continued in countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Sudan, military takeovers destabilised parts of West and Central Africa, and violent extremism gathered pace across the continent. With nearly 20 elections planned in 2024, democracy and governance will be put to the test.
How is the African Union (AU) faring amid these challenges, and will it utilise its 37th summit in February to deliver a more robust response than in previous years? How might the shifting global political landscape affect peace and security in Africa?
This event is co-hosted by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) and Amani Africa.
