Vusi Pikoli to open ISS annual international conference

South Africa's former head of prosecutions will discuss the challenges to the rule of law in the country.

Pretoria, South Africa – On 15 October Adv Vusi Pikoli will deliver the keynote address at the annual international conference hosted by the Governance, Crime and Justice division of the Institute for Security Studies (ISS).

Adv Pikoli is the Police Ombud in the Western Cape and was a Commissioner in the Khayelitsha Commission of Inquiry into policing. He was also South Africa’s National Director of Public Prosecutions between 2005 and 2007 after having served as the Director General of the Department of Justice since 1999. He will draw on his vast experience of the criminal justice system to reflect on challenges to the rule of law in South Africa.

Adv Pikoli’s keynote address will be followed by a panel discussion about commissions of inquiry into policing in South Africa and the launch of the related special edition of South African Crime Quarterly.

This is the ISS’ 6th annual international conference on crime and criminal justice. The event brings together researchers, criminal justice practitioners, policy makers and representatives from community-based organisations to share new research findings about crime, violence prevention and criminal justice in Africa.

The conference will take place at the Maslow Hotel, Sandton, Johannesburg. The event begins on 15 October at 09h00 and concludes on 16 October at 14h30.
