Why join al-Shabaab? New insights into radicalisation in Kenya and Somalia

The seminar will present new research on why men joined al-Shabaab and the Mombasa Republican Council, and what this means for better terrorism responses.

The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and Finn Church Aid (FCA) invite you to attend a seminar on radicalisation and recruitment to al-Shabaab and the Mombasa Republican Council (MRC).

The seminar will present important new empirical research findings on interviews with individuals associated with al-Shabaab and the MRC in Kenya, and former al-Shabaab fighters in Somalia. The study provides insights into why young people in particular are inspired to join radical groups.

Effective strategies to counter radicalisation should reflect an evidence-based understanding of why people join terrorist organisations. Researchers will talk about where government actions are counterproductive in combatting radicalism and terrorism; and the evidence for more effective strategies.

Two new research papers documenting findings in Kenya and Somalia will be released at the seminar. The Kenya study was conducted as part of an independent academic study, and the Somalia study was commissioned by Finn Church Aid.
