South Africa’s acting police head is behind two major initiatives to get the police back on track. After being appointed to the top job in October 2015, Lt Gen Khomotso Phahlane wasted no time in shaking up the management structure of the South African Police Service (SAPS).

His back-to-basics approach tackles under-performance in specific core functions of the police. He’s also intent on improving the professionalism of the police and ensuring that officials adhere to the SAPS’s Code of Conduct.

Join this seminar to hear Phahlane explain these initiatives and his strategy for effective policing. The ISS’ Dr Johan Burger will discuss the context in which Phahlane is working based on his own experience of SAPS restructuring and his recent research into specialised detective units in the country.
