Can Lesotho's new coalition government deliver?

Following the collapse of its first coalition government, a disputed attempted coup and a SADC mediation that paved the way for elections in February 2015, Lesotho has a new coalition government.

The seven party coalition government has committed itself to restoring national peace and political stability, as well as embarking on key constitutional and political reforms to prevent recurrent instability.

Is this a new phase in Lesotho’s politics and governance or will the new government be trapped by old problems?

This seminar focuses on some of the challenges facing Lesotho’s new government, as well as the country’s prospects for future stability and development.

Chair: Dimpho Motsamai, Researcher, Conflict Prevention and Risk Analysis division, ISS Pretoria

Speakers:

  • Dr Fako Likoti, Former Commissioner, Lesotho Independent Electoral Commission
  • General Samuel Makoro, Former Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff, Administration, Lesotho Defense Force, and current Maseru District Administrator
