Beyond Bashir: what else happened at the 25th AU Summit?

Expert analysis on the latest developments in Burundi, Libya and South Sudan and the future of the ACIRC.

The drama surrounding the non-arrest of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir overshadowed much of the proceedings at the 25th African Union (AU) Summit hosted in Johannesburg last week.

South Africa’s decision to host Bashir, despite its domestic and international obligations to arrest and deliver him to the International Criminal Court, distracted the AU from dealing with several important issues on its agenda.

This seminar takes a look at what was missed in the furore, with a focus on discussions and decisions relating to governance, peace and security in Africa.

Speakers will cover developments relating to Burundi, Libya, South Sudan, the Continental Free Trade Area and the future of the African Capacity for Immediate Response to Crises.

Chair: Berouk Mesfin, Senior Researcher, ISS Addis Ababa

  • Désiré Assogbavi, Head, Oxfam International Liaison Office to the African Union
