Speaking at a conference on crime in February 2005, Anton Katz, an advocate practising in Cape Town, added his voice to the many others that have expressed concern about a disturbing phenomenon: that with a dramatic increase in trans-border movement of human beings over the past decade South Africa has become a desirable state for fugitives from criminal justice to hide.

The African Union (AU) has decided to extend the mandate of its Peacekeeping forces in the Sudanese region of Darfur until the end of the Year, AU Peace & Security Council (PSC) Chair, Burkina Faso President, Blaise Campaore announced in New York at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters.

ISS Today: Progress Towards a Landmine-Free Africa?

On 13 September 2006, the eighth annual Landmine Monitor Report was released by the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL). Since 1998, a network of some 70 civil society researchers from over 60 countries have collected information to monitor what has become one of the most important humanitarian laws and disarmament United Nations Conventions – the 1997 Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction (APM Ban Convention).

Later this week the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will hold a summit meeting in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, to discuss a way out of the long-running political crisis in Côte’Ivoire. President Gbagbo has given little evidence of any willingness to cooperate with an organisation he sees as largely hostile.
