EU commander upbeat about military stability in Congo

Visit to the ISS by Lt Gen Karl-Heinz Viereck, Operations Commander EUFOR, DRC

The ISS Pretoria was very fortunate to host Gen Viereck, Operations Commander EUFOR RD Congo on 13 September 2006. The seminar was well attended by 60 plus people from the diplomatic community, South African Government and the media.

Gen Viereck did a presentation at an open seminar on EUFOR RD Congo on the mission. The General explained that the mandate of the mission is to support the electoral process, MONUC, the evacuation of people in danger, the securing of the airport, information gathering and informing the people of DRC about their mission. He stated that the mission is happy how it reacted during the crisis on 20 to 22 August. He said there is now a very good working relation between EUFOR, MONUC, FARDC, PNC, GSSP and Bemba’s soldiers.

The most important thing is for Kablila and Bemba to come to terms on the way forward and with the support of the international community this possible. He does not foresee that EUFOR would stay longer as mandated, that is the end of November 2006.

ISS Today: The Other 9/11

ISS Today, 11 September:

Today is being marked around the western world as a watershed moment in modern history. Five years since the attacks on the Twin Towers in the United States, the event continues to define the destinies of so many nations far removed from the streets of New York. In a world that has been defined in binary terms by the US President, George Bush, between good and evil, and with a need to counter violence with violence, it would be pertinent for us to reach back into history and rediscover a reason to celebrate this day.
