This refers to a robbery that took place at the Johannesburg International Airport in March, 2006. As the report goes, a number of accused were tortured and/or killed during the investigation that followed this robbery. The state prosecutor is reported to have attributed the incidents (torture and killings) to members of the police who 'were knocking off witnesses as they were trying to cover their own tracks'. The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) has confirmed that they are investigating the matter. These allegations, whether truthful or not, underline the necessity of independent oversight of the South African Police Service (SAPS).
