Police stats show falls in some major crimes

... The number of murders, which peaked in the 1995/96 financial year at 26 877, dropped 30% to 18 793 in 2004/05, according to an analysis of national crime statistics by Institute for Security Studies researcher Antony Altbeker.

ISS Today: Blasts in Ethiopian capital kill one, injure several

A series of five blasts killed one person and injured at least 14 others in Addis Ababa on Monday, the first fatality in a string of mysterious explosions in the Ethiopian capital. One person was killed and three others injured when the first blast ripped through a minibus in the southern part of the city.

Speaking in Accra at a Regional workshop on advancing Anti-Corruption Conventions in Africa jointly organized by the Transparency International (TI) represented by its local branch, the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and the UNDP, Mr. Toure said that it is now a widely accepted fact that not only does corruption retard economic development, but it also contributes to political and social instability by undermining democratic institutions.
