...Despite the shadow cast by corruption, research conducted at the CSVR shows that the South African Police Service (SAPS) has improved its performance in the past 10 years. This is according to Antony Altbeker, a senior researcher at the CSVR, who addressed the seminar on Tuesday evening.

 

Amnesty International Sounds the Alarm Over DRC

Human rights watchdog Amnesty International has expressed concern over mounting political and ethnic tensions in the North-Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) -- warning that this might spark renewed conflict in the country.

...Jean-Marie Gasana, a researcher at the Pretoria-based Institute for Security Studies, believes the threats in North-Kivu can be contained.

In Memoriam: Adv Mukelabai Mukelabai

The Institute for Security Studies is saddened to announce the death of Advocate Mukelabai Mukelabai in Cape Town, South Africa on 29 September 2005.

Mukelabai joined the Cape Town Office of the ISS in June 2004 as Senior Researcher: Organised Crime and Corruption in the SADC Region. He was responsible for, amongst other, a project that is supporting Southern African Development Community (SADC) Member States with the implementation of the SADC Protocol Against Corruption and UN Convention Against Transnational Organised Crime.

He was awarded a Bachelor of Law Degree from the University of Zambia and a Masters of Law Degree from the University of Sussex. He practiced as an Advocate in the private and public sectors and served as Zambian National Director of Public Prosecutions from 1998 to 2004. He served as a part-time lecturer in criminal law at the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education. Mukelabai also served as a member of the Editorial Board of the Zambian Council of Law Reporting.

Mukelabai – or Muke as he was affectionately known by colleagues and friends - was committed to the work of the ISS and it was our privilege to have him as a colleague. Mukelabai was recognised by all that knew him as being a person of the utmost integrity and dedicated himself to promoting social justice and good government throughout Southern Africa. The region has lost a courageous anti-corruption fighter. We mourn his loss and he will be deeply missed. Our sympathies go to his family, colleagues and friends during this difficult time.
